Episode 20: Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to us!  Well sorta.  I mean, technically this site has been running for over a year now, and technically our first episode aired on the 20th, but whatever.  Happy Birthday to us again!  Since it’s our birthday episode we thought what better way to celebrate than with a clip show!  Everybody loves recycled content … right!?  Just kidding, our clip show is actually full of never-before-released bloopers going all the way back to episode 3 when I first started adding out-takes to the end of the show.  But wait, there’s more!  We couldn’t just do that and call it a day of course; no, no.  We’re also rolling out a new segment, Turn 8 Tactica!  This episode covers the ever popular psykers.  We also have the report from the battlefront that was Brave New Worlds’ Escalation Tournament.  Hopefully that explains why this takes the cake as our longest episode ever.

Episode 19: Spring (Assault) Is In The Air

What a day, what a day.  Saturday, that is, April the 21st of twenty twelve.  Berks Spring Assault 3 day.  That’s right of course we’re back to talk about all the details revolving around this yearly event that holds a special place in Turn 8′s collective heart.  Opy, Andy and Mike are here to break the day down (with my help of course), the good, the bad and the … rainbows.  And as if that wasn’t enough, Bill finally reveals all the details on the “super secret” project he’s been working on.

Build a Stormraven – Part 3 of 4: Painting and Basing

Stormraven Primed Wings offA note from the Editor: It is with great pleasure that I present to you a labor of love and wonderful tutorial from two-time guest host, Andy! This complete tutorial features his fantastically painted Blood Angel’s Stormraven which he slaved over in the beginning of 2011. The original tutorial, which can be found on Andy’s blog, was delivered over nine parts. Andy has been gracious enough to recreate that tutorial here, slightly condensed, for you, the Turn 8 audience (also, it gives some better exposure to his work … win/win!). Please enjoy and feel free to leave our man a comment or two.

In the next part of Build a Stormraven, after priming everything Dragon Red and magnetizing the wings, I started to paint the details on the ship.   First I put a base coat of black on all areas that I wanted to be black or Boltgun Metal.  The black areas are meant to create a sort of visual rhythm (a series of light-dark-light areas), too often people will paint a model all one color and call it a day.

The first parts that I actually wanted to do finished detail work was the cockpit, top turret and top intake vent so I could glue the canopy on the cockpit and glue together the top turret.  I used Blood Red as the pilots highlight color and a 1:1 mix of Codex Grey and Black to highlight the black areas.   For the buttons and control panels, I use a variety of colors (blue, green, red) and just highlighted them with a quick dab of white.

Main Body with Magnets

Generally the Boltgun Metal areas were utilitarian in nature, ie. turbines, parts of landing gear and turrets.   Stuff that moves around a lot or may be fixed or replaced a lot by servitors. Read the rest of this entry »

Episode 18: Interview With a … Tournament Organizer

What? Were you expecting vampires?

The time rapidly approaches for the Berks Spring Assault III and just in case you don’t already have all the details, we’ve brought the head honcho, Mike Biancone, on the show for a little sit down.  Ok, a long sit down, but it is packed full of great info covering everything you could possibly want to know about Spring Assault and probably even more than that.  Plus, Bill gives some clues as to what his “Super Secret” project is.  I hope it’s a sandwich because I’m friggen hungry!

Escalation League: Coteaz 500 Points

gk2 As promised here are some photos of my initial 500 Coteaz Escalation League army. As I mentioned in the podcast, I entered the league so I would be inspired to create the army I had been intending to build since the moment I started Grey Knights, a totally Inquisition henchmen army. Granted there are some dreadnaughts thrown in there as well, but seriously how can a Grey Knight player not bring Psybolt Dreads?

Anyway, for those of you who might have missed it, here is my initial 500 points:

HQ:
Inquisitor Coteaz

Troops:
9 Warrior Acolytes with 2 Meltaguns and 7 Bolters
- Chimera with Multilaser and Heavy Flamer

6 Deathcult Assassins and 1 Crusader
- Rhino

Heavy Support:
Dreadnaught with 2 Twin Linked Autocannons and Psybolts

For the deathcults I used Dark Elf Corsairs from fantasy. I have seen people use Dark Eldar Wyches as well, but I didn’t want to use any existing 40k models to prevent confusion. The Crusader is a Bretonian Man-at-Arms with some purity seals thrown on him. Weird how a piece of paper and a wax seal makes him seem from the future… Finally for the Acolytes I used Cadian guardsmen, replacing their flashlights with bolters or meltagun bits I ordered from eBay. The autocannons for the Dread are of course from the Aegis Defense lines that Bill and I happen to have bought a bunch of back when planetstrike came out. Otherwise, everything else is pretty standard stuff.

So far I am pretty happy with my army, though I am still adjusting to the poor BS of the Henchmen squads. While the Deathcult have failed to do much so far, I have mostly fought shooting heavy armies so they are usually get shot down before reaching their target. However, Coteaz will often make back those points once he gets in close combat, assuming the enemy doesn’t have a powerfist. I wont get into the specifics, but the next 500 points will add quite a few more henchmen squads and Chimeras. It will be by far the largest phase of the army in terms of how many models i will need to paint. Hopefully I can complete them in time.

I am really looking forward to continuing the league and the completion of my 1500 Inquisition army!

Build a Stormraven – Part 2 of 4: Priming and Magnetizing

Primed!

For part two of how to build a Stormraven, I have my Stormraven primed with Army Painter Dragon Red spray paint.   For those used to GW’s primers this spray paint is a rather different animal.   Its a thicker paint out of the can and a bit more touchy than GW’s.   Make sure the humidity is not above 50-60% when you are painting and also make sure its not too hot or cold out, I’d say no hotter than 85 degrees and no colder than 50 degrees.   Also you will have to spray a bit closer than GW cans, which are generally best at about 6-8 inches from nozzle to model.   Make sure the Army Painter nozzle is about 4-5 inches away from your model.   If you get further you run the risk of the paint drying before hitting the model and this creates a sandpaper like texture.   If you paint on a hot humid day (or on a rainy day), you’ll also get this same sandpaper texture.

Even with all these high maintenance instructions, I HIGHLY recommend priming with Army Painter sprays. Their selection of color is fantastic and for the most part, color matches GW’s line of paints. I also used the Skeleton Bone Spray paint (matches GW’s Bleached Bone) to prime all my Tau army.

With that being said, Dragon Red is a darker shade than GW’s Blood Red. The closest GW paint is the Foundation Paint: Mechrite Red. But unfortunately this isn’t an exact match. So I had to find something else… Read the rest of this entry »

Episode 16: End of Days

D-Day approaches!  For me anyway … and really I guess it’s W-Day, but whatever, the point is this is the last episode before yours truly is bound by the shackles of love.  As such there will be a little bit of a longer hiatus between episodes 16 and 17 (expected to be three weeks instead of what would be the usual two) so get your Turn 8 while it’s piping hot!  Today’s episode is back to basics with our usual bag of tricks, no special segments and therefore it’s a little more bite sized for those that enjoy a shorter show.  Also, we finally reveal the details about our Blind Fight, so tune in!

Build a Stormraven – Part 1 of 4: Interior and Assembly

Interior viewA note from the Editor: It is with great pleasure that I present to you a labor of love and wonderful tutorial from two-time guest host, Andy!

The Interior:

Ok, so I’m FINALLY posting my walk through of the building and painting of my Blood Angels Stormraven.   So,  obviously I unsprued things and filed down all the mold lines etc.   I decided to actually paint the inside of this thing (for some reason).   First I black primered the interior (not the outside).   Then I used Boltgun Metal to pretty much coat the entire interior (Space Marines aren’t into interior design so much).   I used the Black Ink (not Badab black, I have an old bottle of the stuff and its MUCH stronger than Badab Black)  with a half water half ink mix and washed the hole interior.   If you have Badab Black, just use that straight up with no dilution.  Then i did a dry brush of Boltgun Metal again to get rid of the “watermarks”.  For the walkway ramps, I also did a wash of Devlan Mud to show where the Marines would trudge dirt and grime everywhere when they embark and disembark.

interior view

Next step, I used Scorched Brown on the leather seats and highlighted with Bestial Brown.   Gold parts were based with Shining Gold, highlighted with Burnished Gold and then a little bit of Mithril Silver on the corners and points. Read the rest of this entry »

Episode 15: The Mother Load

Ho boy, it happened again didn’t it?  Yup, really long episode to cover a large amount of content.  You guessed it folks, solid rumors and PDF’s about Warhammer 40k 6th edition are flying around the internet and we’re here to talk it all up.  There’s so much to discuss in fact that we have to go without our usual Rules of Engagement and the show is still over 3 hours!  We also bring back friend of the show Andy to discuss what has changed since Episode 4 when we first brought you these rumors.  Oh, and on top of all of that … the Necron FAQ dropped!
