Episode 28: Sandy, Harbinger of Chaos

After one major and then one minor delay, we finally bring you our Chaos Space Marines codex review!!  Well, part one of it anyway, there’s a lot to cover after all.  In this episode Opy takes us through the Chaos specific Warlord Traits, Psychic Powers, and the Armory.  We also cover quite a bit of news and bring you another Chaos related rule.  Who doesn’t love a good challenge?  Next episode we’ll conclude the codex review as we cover the units.  I would also like to apologize for the lateness of this particular show.  As some of you know we delayed our recording due to hurricane Sandy which, if you don’t know for some reason, recently ravaged the east coast of the U.S., particularly New Jersey.  Most of us here lost power for at least a bit (or a lot more) but were otherwise OK, our trees however …   In addition to that delay, work and other personal things on my end delayed the debut of this episode from Friday till now, but anyway, we’re back with more quality podcast programing for your ear holes, enjoy!

Episode 27: Chaos Is Pretty

Breathe it in, that new codex smell!  It’s finally here, the hardbound, full-color … $50 … new Chaos Space Marine codex!  Check inside this episode for our preview of what’s new for CSM’s.  Of course we can’t tell you everything good or bad about the new codex right off the bat since as of this episode’s recording it had only been out for two days, however, there’s still a lot of good info to be had including our resident Chaos vet, Opy’s, initial impressions.  We’ve also flavored our Round-up and Rules of Engagement with sprinklings of Chaos-y goodness

Episode 26: The Campaign Trail 2012 – Part II

This bipartisan campaign rages on!  Who will claim the victory … the Aggressors or the Defenders?  That’s right folks, it’s part two of our continuing Warhammer 40k campaign coverage and this time we brought in the experts … or rather, the expert, Isaac.  Indeed this campaign is his brainchild and so in this show we crack open his skull and pick apart the gooey inside for details … metaphorically speaking of course.  Part 1 in the show covers the games that have taken place since the last episode while Part 2 gets into the details about the rules and the story.  This episode is jam packed though because we’ve also got our spin on the recently released FAQ’s.  All that content means this show is a little on the longer side so you might want to take it in doses.  On the positive side, I got to reuse our campaign graphic!  Yay!

Tervigon / Tyrannofex Assemble!

I first assembled the central core body as pointed out in the instructions, and placed magnets in the front two shoulder sockets.  One thing you want to make sure is that the legs in the middle are wide enough for the Tervigon sack but will still fit on the base itself.  I also put some green stuff with a magnet in the neck socket and on the back of the neck of the Tervigon and Tyrannofex heads.

I then placed two magnets on the bottom hoofs and I let that glue dry overnight.   I then placed 2 magnets on the bottom of the base.  Before the glue is settled on the bottom of the base I slid the model around until it fit nicely.

Episode 24: Little Devils

White Dwarf updates are going to be all the rage in 6th edition it seems, starting right now with Daemons!  It’s not a full codex but it’s more than just updated rules, now with new models!  And Fantasy too!  All this in a handy little pamphlet that comes packaged with the magazine but isn’t actually attached for easier transport with your existing codexes.  Neat feature?  More annoying crap to carry around?  You tell us!  Sound off in the comments.  Anyway, Dave is your guide this episode to all things Daemons, so thanks Dave!  Enjoy!

Episode 23: The Aquila Has Landed

It’s 6th Edition baby!  Everything old is new again, including podcast episode titles, hooray!  Anyway, as I’m sure you’ve guessed, this is our first episode officially covering 6th edition of Warhammer 40000.  We’ve got a full crew this go ’round with Andy, Mike and Dave joining us to give first impressions on the new rules.  Plus our signature Battle Report this episode covers a lot of new features, including allies!  Not to mention the triumphant return of the Rules of Engagement.  We’re going back to basics with this one and starting simple, with movement.  P.S.  I apologize if it sounds like some of us are standing in a wind tunnel during this episode.  It’s been well over 90 degrees here (33 for you Celsius folks) and the A/C’s are on overdrive.

Episode 22: 6th Edition Cometh

As Opy says, “5th Edition, we hardly knew ye … actually we knew ye quite well,” and aside from the ye’s, that’s the truth.  But, out with the old and in with the 6th Edition!  So begins our shift from rumors to facts and all the joy and pain and suffering that comes with learning everything you know all over again … huzzah!?  Before we drop 5th like a bad habit though, we give it a fond farewell, cover one last 5th Edition tournament hosted by Stomping Grounds and of course, the epic conclusion to our three part Battle Report miniseries.  Get some!

Episode 21: Wish List

It is the beginning of the end … of 5th edition.  It seems like only … several years ago … it all got started, but as Star Trek episode titles say, “All good things”.  But the future is coming!  What will it bring?  Ponies?  Candy?  Unicorns that eat ponies and poop candy?  ‘Cause that’s crazy and I’m not sure how I feel about it.  Anyway, with likely less than a month to go the gang here at Turn 8 thought it was a good time to express our greatest hopes and deepest fears … for 6th edition.  Some ideas are from the rumors (fake ones or otherwise) and some are Bill’s deep seated neuroses … err .. I mean, fresh ideas!  And of course, part 2 of our three part Battle Report Miniseries is here!  Farseer Ellysia and Kor’sarro Khan meet again on the field of battle, with decidedly different results from their last encounter!  Don’t miss it!

Build a Stormraven – Part 4 of 4: Icon Details, Applying Decals and Final Pictures

Stormraven Primed Wings offA note from the Editor: It is with great pleasure that I present to you a labor of love and wonderful tutorial from one of our new contributors, Andy! This complete tutorial features his fantastically painted Blood Angel’s Stormraven which he slaved over in the beginning of 2011. The original tutorial, which can be found on Andy’s blog, was delivered over nine parts. Andy has been gracious enough to recreate that tutorial here, slightly condensed, for you, the Turn 8 audience (also, it gives some better exposure to his work … win/win!). Please enjoy and feel free to leave our man a comment or two.

In this installment, I’m gonna go over the icons I used for extra decoration.  First off, the Stormraven comes with plastic relief icons of the basic Blood Angels “winged blood droplet”.  I used one of these on the front right of the vehicle, but I also had some left over Blood Angels icons from the Baal Predator kit.  You can also buy these icons separately at a bits store or eBay.

The first icon I’ll go over is the angel dropping blood from a chalice on the left wing.  For all the icons I used a white base coat to make the colors really pop and the fact that the colors were mostly whites and light colors.  I painted the scrolled portion and the angel’s garment Bleached Bone.  I kept the wings white and used Blood Red for the actual blood droplet.  I used Dwarf Flesh as a base for the face and highlighted with Elf Flesh.  For the gold crown I used Shining Gold and then a Burnished Gold Highlight.  After all the base colors were painted, I washed the wings with Azurman Blue Wash and then highlighted with Bone White.  For the scroll portion and garments and used a Devlan Mud wash and then Highlighted again with Bleached Bone.  I highlighted the blood droplet with Blazing Orange and then Skull White for the specular reflection.  I then used Chaos Black and a very fine brush to put in the text.
